Structures near Durand Line to be demolished’

KABUL (AIP): The Afghan Ministry of Defence has said all-out efforts would be made to demolish the structures established by Pakistan near the Durand Line.

Follow up:

Terming the construction of installations near the Durand Line against the international principles, the spokesman for Afghan defence ministry General Muhammad Zahir Azimi said it was a one-sided step which Afghanistan would never accept.

Addressing a joint press conference with the ISAF spokesman General Gunter Katz in Kabul on Monday, Azimi said the Afghan government could not tolerate the structures established in Goshti district of Nangarhar province.

“Afghanistan and Pakistan should have an agreement for any installations on the Durand Line. This gate has been constructed in the soil of Afghanistan, far away from the Durand Line. This action is against all the international standards and is also against the existing principles between the two countries. We shall demolish this gate and security checkpoints and we are ready to take any step for this,” he added.

General Azimi said if the diplomatic efforts did not give any results, they were ready to utilise other ways. He, however, did not explain these “other ways.”

The Afghan foreign ministry recently warned the ambassador of Pakistan to Kabul that it is not a proper action, and that his country should not make such movements near the Durand Line.

A meeting of National Security Council of Afghanistan on Sunday widely discussed the issue. A report in this regard was presented to the Afghan President Hamid Karzai and other attendees.

The report readout that Pakistan with the support of coalition forces has shifted 11 security checkpoints and other structures near the Durand Line.

A delegation sent by the Afghan government to Goshti district said in its report that the government of Pakistan has moved forward its checkpoints in Mohmand Agency and has established a gate in the soil of Afghanistan.

Despite the repeated queries of reporters, the ISAF spokesman General Gunter Katz did not give any clear answer whether the coalition troops had really assisted Pakistan to establish security checkposts and gates about 10 years ago. He, however, said they would conduct probe into the issue.

“ISAF keeps eye on the borders of Afghanistan. We will discuss the issue with the Afghan and Pakistani authorities. We will investigate the matter. A statement has also been issued by the Presidential Palace of Afghanistan and we are aware of it. But currently I cannot comment on the issue,” he said.

The Pakistani authorities have not said anything about the concerns and warnings of Afghan government so far. However, analysts say if Pakistan did not adopt a clear stance in this regard, the existing ties between the two countries would further get deteriorated.
