Pakistan bans website on 'liberal' Islam

By NEHA PUSHKARNA

Selling new-age Islam to Pakistan is a daunting task. For Sultan Shahin, who runs a liberal-view website with the same name, it proved to be futile.

Shahin's newageislam.com - a Delhi-based online resource on Islam - has been banned in Pakistan for being 'too liberal' as well as critical of the contemporary interpretation of the 1,400-year-old religion.

Shahin's multilingual website, started in 2008, was banned in Pakistan on June 30 this year. According to him, it was done on the directions of the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority following the website's tirade against Talibani writings.

The blocking of the website started with individual articles written by regular columnists and Islamic scholars from Pakistan on peace, terrorism, gender discrimination and attack on minorities.

"We have faced many hacking attempts in the first two years of the website but this is the first time that a government has acted against the content of our website which only aims to inform people about Islam as is written in Quran. For the past eight months, we have been refuting Talibani articles point by point. I think it is a fallout of that," said Shahin, even as he contemplated approaching the external affairs ministry to take up this matter with the Pakistan's government.

The website, which also has a daily newsletter, posts content in English, Hindi, Arabic and French.
