Justice Sathasivam sworn in as chief justice of India




New Delhi : President Pranab Mukherjee Friday administered the oath of office to Justice P. Sathasivam as the chief justice of India (CJI).

Justice Sathasivam, 64, is the 40th CJI and the first from Tamil Nadu. He will remain in office till April 26, 2014. He succeeded CJI Altamas Kabir, whose last day in office was Thursday.

Congress hides behind 'burqa' of secularism during crisis: Narendra Modi



Pune: An aggressive Narendra Modi used an hour-long speech in Pune to declare the battle for 2014 open, ripping into the ruling Congress for its economic policies and accusing it of "hiding behind a burqa (veil) of secularism every time it is in trouble."

Mr Modi was on Sunday addressing his first public rally after being elevated as the BJP's election campaign speech. He was also speaking just two days after a controversial interview to news agency Reuters where his analogy of a puppy when talking about the deaths in the 2002 Gujarat riots has drawn much flak from political rivals.

Ten killed in road mishap in Andhra Pradesh



At least ten people were killed and four others got injured when a lorry in which they were travelling overturned in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh in the wee hours Monday, police said.

The incident occurred near Singarayakonda at around 1.30am when the cement-laden lorry was on its way from Nalgonda towards Puducherry.

All ten victims died on the spot, they said.

Sikh Group Offers $1 Mn Reward for Sajjan's Conviction



A US-based Sikh rights group has announced an award of USD 1 million to any individual, whose testimony and evidence may result in conviction of Sajjan Kumar, the senior Congress leader from Delhi.

"The 'Million Dollar' reward will be given to those individuals who will come forward with tips, evidence and testimony leading to the reversal of Judge Aryan's April 30 order acquitting Congress leader Sajjan Kumar for role in the killing of Sikhs in November 1984," Sikh for Justice said in a statement.

Police checkpost attack in Hyderabad leaves two injured


HYDERABAD: A police head constable and a pedestrian received bullet injuries after a police checkpost of Tando Yusuf police station was attacked on Monday night by unidentified gunmen.

The policeman, identified as Khair Mohammad and a pedestrian Ali Hassan Zaunr, were shifted to Liaquat University Hospital branch.

The attackers fled away, according SHO Tahir Khanzada. Hyderabad has been in the grip of violence since Sunday night.

An ice cream shopowner, Rehmanullah and his employee Imtiaz Ali were attacked by gunmen in Qasimabad.


Shiv Sena condemns US over Azam Khan detention



The Shiv Sena on Tuesday came out in support of Samajwadi Party (SP) leader and Uttar Pradesh minister Azam Khan who was last week detained at Boston airport while on his way to deliver a lecture at Harvard University.

Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray said the US must clarify whether the treatment meted out to Azam Khan was because of his surname or because he was an Indian.

Lok Sabha adjourned for day over 'quit PM' demands



New Delhi: The Lok Sabha was Tuesday adjourned for the day amid noisy demands by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's resignation.

The House will now meet Thursday as Wednesday is a holiday for Mahavir Jayanti.

The Lok Sabha was earlier adjourned soon after it assembled when Samajwadi Party (SP) members gathered near the Speaker's podium to protest reports of Chinese incursion in the Ladakh region.

Second accused in minor rape case arrested by Delhi Police from Bihar



One more person allegedly involved in the rape of a five-year-old girl here a week ago has been arrested, police said on Monday.

Pradeep, the second accused, was apprehended from Bihar in a joint operation by Delhi and Bihar Police, Delhi Police Commissioner
Neeraj Kumar said.

"He will be brought to Delhi today after getting a transit remand from Darbhanga court," Kumar said.

Akalis seek Germany’s intervention



A delegation of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) MPs and Delhi blast case convict Devinderpal Singh Bhullar’s wife Navneet Kaur on Tuesday submitted a memorandum to the Political Councillor of the German Embassy here, seeking the European nation’s intervention in the matter of award of the death sentence to him.

Bhullar was extradited to India from Germany.

Twenty phone nos. under lens for terror links: Goa CM



The Goa government is tapping 20 mobile and landline numbers of people, who are suspected to have terror links, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said today.

Parrikar told the Legislative Assembly that the state government is tapping 20 mobile/ landline phones since March 2012 till date.

"All the tappings are related with crime. Most of these cases are related with terrorism, where there is clear suspicion of having terror links," the Chief Minister told the House, while responding to a question tabled by Congress legislator Jeniffer Monserratte.
