Bangladesh elects parliament speaker as new president



DHAKA: The speaker of Bangladesh’s parliament Abdul Hamid was elected unopposed as president Monday, a potentially crucial role as the restive country heads for elections next year, officials said.

Hamid is a 69-year-old stalwart of the ruling Awami League party who has been serving as acting president of the Muslim-majority nation after the death of his predecessor Zillur Rahman on March 20.

Tribunal permits Sharifs to contest polls


LAHORE: An election tribunal accepted on Monday Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chief Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers for NA-119 constituency and his brother Shahbaz Sharif’s papers for the NA-161 seat, DawnNews reported.Earlier, Nawaz Sharif’s candidacy papers from NA-120 had been challenged before an election tribunal of the Lahore High Court.

Former MNA declared proclaimed offender over fake degree



KARACHI: A District and Sessions Judge in Pakpattan declared a former Member of National Assembly, Syed Salman Mohsin Gilani, belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League – Nawaz (PML-N) a proclaimed offender on Thursday over possession of a fake degree.

Mohsin was elected as an MNA from NA-165 Pakpattan during the 2008 elections.

Moreover a local court in Quetta reserved its judgement upon conclusion of hearing over a case pertaining to possession of  fake degree against former provincial minister from Balochistan Mir Ali Madad Jattak.

Muslim League chief sent to judicial custody till April 15

A local court in north Kashmir has remanded hardline Hurriyat leader and Muslim league chairman Masarat Alam Bhat in judicial custody till April 15 and he has been sent to Baramulla district jail.

Masarat was produced by the police before the court of Munsif Magistrate at Tangmarg today.

“Masarat was supposed to be produced before the sub-judge Pattan, where he is facing trial in an FIR registered against him in 2010. Since the said judge was on leave, in his absence, Masarat as an undertrial was produced before the court of Munsif (1st Class Magistrate) at Tangmarg in north Kashmir”, said Masarat’s lawyer Shabbir Ahmad.

Masarat Alam is facing trial in case FIR 215/2010 registered against him under Sections 148, 149, 332, 336, 307 and 427 of RPC at Pattan police station in Baramulla district. The police has already produced chargesheet in this case before the court of sub judge Pattan in north Kashmir.
