Putting the government in a spot, Hurriyat chief Syed Ali Shah Geelani has announced he would "address the nation" through internet Saturday evening.
Follow up:
"On the current situation, Geelani Sahib will make a special address to people and the nation," a Hurriyat spokesperson said. "Since the leader of revolution is under house arrest for several months and doesn't have access to people, he will reach out to them through internet." Geelani, who has been under house arrest since he returned from Delhi after the hanging of Afzal Guru, has chosen for his 8.30 pm address March 23, celebrated as Pakistan Day.
"Supporters of freedom especially the youth can listen to this speech on the Facebook page All Parties Hurriyat Conference."
This will be the first time a separatist leader will address people through internet. In the past, whenever Geelani was house arrested for months at a stretch, he posted video replies on Hurriyat's website to questions from supporters.
Geelani's announcement of an "address to the nation" aims to challenge the writ of the government, not unlike the weekly protest calendars issued by Muttahida Majlis-e-Mushawarat, a consultative committee of separatists to campaign for the return of the mortal remains of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Bhat. The committee has been advising people to run their shops and business establishments on Sundays, in contravention of government rules. And most shops, business establishments and some schools do remain open Sundays.
