SRINAGAR: With Srinagar staggering under successive terrorist assaults, things turned for the worse on Sunday when Sumbal in Bandipora erupted in massive protests after two youth were killed in firing by security personnel on a combing mission.
Irfan Ahmad Gania, 18, and Irshad Ahmad Dar, 25, were, according to their parents, attending a wedding at Markundal village in Sumbal, at 4am when they were killed by the security forces. However, Rashtriya Rifles said its jawans acting on specific intelligence inputs about presence of terrorists, had cordoned off the area, when there was a burst of gunfire from a house beyond the sanitised area.
A defence spokesman said RR and J&K police had launched a combing operation in light of recent terrorist assaults late on Saturday night based on specific intelligence about the presence of terrorists in Markandal area.
"On establishment of the cordon, a burst of fire was heard from a place beyond the cordon," the statement said. "Hearing about a youth being injured in firing, an ambulance with a doctor and his team were brought in . But the effort was interrupted by a mob and had to be aborted. The youth later succumbed to his injuries."
RR said its ambulance was attacked by a violent mob a 5.15am. "The mob tried to set the ambulance on fire and assault the doctor and the medical team," the statement said. "While disengaging, the troops fired in self-defence, resulting in injury to another youth who later died."
"My son was killed deliberately by the Rashtriya Rifles and his brain was completely damaged in the firing," said Ghulam Bani Gania, Irfan's father.
The RR statement added: "Notwithstanding the circumstances, the incident is being investigated and wrongdoings, if any, will be dealt with severely. The Army condoles the unfortunate loss of lives and conveys its condolences to the bereaved families."
With more than 1,000 people shouting slogans against the security forces, police lathicharged protesters and launched tear-gas shells to disperse them. Protests continued until later in the day but DIG (North Kashmir) JP Singh said the situation was under control. An FIR was filed for murder at Sumbal police station against those responsible for the killings. An official spokesman said the DGP was asked to expedite the investigation.
