Brazil humiliate Spain 3-0 in Confederations Cup final

RIO DE JANEIRO: A young and inexperienced Brazilian side led by 21-year-old striker Neymar crushed world and European champions Spain 3-0 win in the Confederations Cup final here on Sunday.

Playing effective and assertive football, Brazil steamrolled over the football powerhouse Spain in front of 78,000 fans at the Maracana to win the Confederations Cup for the fourth time. With this victory, Brazil sent a message to all its rivals: under Luis Felipe Scolari, the host country will be a strong contender for the World Cup title in 2014.

As soon as game began at 7pm local time, Brazil made it clear that they had a plan for Spain, known for playing their tiki-taka style of football. In the second minute of the game, Brazilian striker Hulk made a move from the right and sent a cross into the Spanish area. Failing to tap the ball, Brazilian centre-forward Fred slipped and the ball hit Neymar's, Arbeloa's hand and turned to Fred who hooked it into the goal with his right foot. It was not a pretty goal, but it was enough to stun the Spanish side and trigger an euphoria in the jam-packed stadium.

With the crowds chanting "the champions are back", Brazil made several dangerous moves towards the Spanish area even as they didn't allow the world champions to play their pass-and-possess style football. Brazil could have gone up 2-0 in the eight minute when Neymar passed the ball to Oscar in front of the goal, but the midfielder missed the target.

Oscar made it up for this lapse in the 43rd minute when he gave a beautiful pass to Neymar on the edge of Spanish area and the striker sent a 110 km an hour sizzler into the roof of the net, with Spanish goalie looking helplessly at the ball flying above his head. Brazil was 2-0 when the break was taken after 47 minutes of play.

When the game resumed, in a kind of action replay of the first half, Fred scored another goal in the 2nd minute of the 2nd half to make it 3-0. This goal came after Hulk, again attacking from the right, sent a ball to Neymar on the edge of Spanish area. But the Brazilian striker left the ball for his centre-forward to his left and Fred sent a curling shot around Casillas to make it 3-0.
