The religious vote divided

Nowshera district has been prolific in producing leaders of national stature. As electioneering for the coming general polls goes into top gear, what the voters and parties’ activists are missing is the political wisdom of such stalwarts as Qazi Hussain Ahmed, Ajmal Khattak and Nasirullah Khan Babar.

Follow up:

Both the mainstream political and religious parties have a solid vote bank in Nowshera, which has two national (NA-5 and NA-6) and five (PK-12 to PK-16) provincial assembly seats.

An interesting competition is expected on NA-5, Nowshera-I, where several political heavyweights are in the run. These include the Pakistan Peoples Party’s former MNA, Engineer Tariq, the general secretary of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Pervez Khattak, the former district nazim of the Awami National Party (ANP), Daud Khan Khattak, Asif Luqman Qazi of the Jamaat-i-Islami (JI), Mufti Mohammad Sajjad Ahmad of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), Syed Yousaf Shah of the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Sami (JUI-S), Pir Nabi Ameen of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Shehzad Ali Khan as an independent candidate. Political observers expect a neck-to-neck contest here.

The JI is expected to face a serious challenge from the JUI-F and the JUI-S. This contest will divide the religious vote bank and the benefit is likely to go to the other parties. The absence of the JI’s Qazi Hussain Ahmed, who died earlier during the year, will be felt across the country but more so in Nowshera district and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Similarly, a tough battle is expected on NA-6, Nowshera-II. Vying for the seat are former MNA Masud Abbas Khan Khattak of the ANP, retired Major Liaquat Gilani of the PPP, Maulana Hamidul Haq of the JUI-S, Azizullah Jan of the PTI, Qari Umar Ali of the JUI-F, Zulfiqar Bacha of the PML-N and Meraj ud Din of the JI.

In the previous four general elections, the seat has been secured by ANP leaders the late Ajmal Khattak, Wali Mohammad Khan and Masud Abbas Khattak. Maulana Hamid-ul Haq of the religious alliance of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal won the seat in the 2002 elections.

This time around, the seat is being contested by Hamidul Haq of the Muttahida Deeni Mahaz, Masud Abbas Khattak of the ANP and retired Major Liaquat Gilani of the PPP, who is a new entrant in the electoral arena. The PPP leadership fielded Mr Gilani after refusing the ticket to former federal minister and senior leader Mian Muzaffar Shah.

On PK-12, Nowshera-I, former ANP provincial minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain is facing Ajmal Khan of the JUI-F, Haji Ashfaq Ahmed of the PML-N, Khaliqur Rehman of the PTI, Syed Iftikhar Ali Shah of the PPP, Nadir Shah Khattak of the JI and some independents. Some of these contestants are being hampered in their electioneering because of security concerns.

On PK-13, Nowshera-II, a close contest is expected between PTI general secretary Pervez Khattak, the Qaumi Watan Party’s Engineer Zulfiqar Aziz, Riaz Ahmed of the JUI-S, Mohammad Hanif of the JI, Mufti Imtiaz Ali Haqqani of the JUI-F, Mohammad Shahid of the ANP, Mian Rashid Ali Shah of the PML-N and Mian Yahya Shah of the PPP.

On PK-14, the JI’s Asif Luqman Qazi, the PML-N’s Ikhtiar Wali, the PTI’s Jamshed-ud Din, the QWP’s Fayyaz Khan, the PPP’s former provincial minister Liaquat Shabab, the JUI-F’s Mufti Hakim Ali Haqqani and the ANP’s Malik Aftab Ahmad Khan are in the fray.

Similarly, on PK-15, the battle is between Khalil Abbas Khattak of the ANP, Abdul Ghaffar Khattak of the PML-N, Qaisar Khan Khattak of the QWP, Gohar Zaman Khattak of the PML-Q, Mohammad Idrees of the PTI, Meraj-ud Din of the JI, Mufti Shaukatullah Khattak of the JUI-F and retired Major Basir Khattak of the PPP.

As far as PK-16 is concerned, in the running are Pervez Ahmad Khan of the ANP, Haji Inayatur Rehman of the JI, Hafiq Sulaimanul Haq of the JUI-F, Salim Mohammad Yousafzai of the PML-N, Qurban Ali Khan of the PTI and Mian Rahim Shah Kakakhel of the PPP.

Analysts note that the vote bank of the religious parties is sharply divided because of the number of religious parties in the running. The situation could have been avoided, say observers, with some political acumen.
