FIR can be lodged against armymen, AG says



ISLAMABAD: Attorney General Aslam Butt informed the Supreme Court on Thursday that a First Information Report (FIR) could be filed against a currently serving army official according to Pakistan Army regulations. He said this in the hearing of the Malakand missing persons case, which concerns the disappearance of 35 people from an internment centre in the region, DawnNews reported.

Butt submitted his reply in the apex court regarding FIRs against serving armed forces personnel.

Supreme Court Accuses Sahara Chief of 'Mind Games', Rejects Bail




Subrata Roy, the chief of the unlisted Sahara conglomerate, was refused bail by the Supreme Court today for his company's failure to refund investors in illegal bonds schemes.

The judges used strong language to censure Sahara and Mr Roy for repeatedly defying court orders and for "calculated mind games" to claim that his detention is illegal.

Supreme court asks J&K chief secretary to file affidavit on Kishtwar clashes


The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the chief secretary of Jammu and Kashmir to file a detailed affidavit on the communal clashes in Kishtwar district and subsequent steps taken by the state government to control the situation.

The apex court directed the chief secretary to file the affidavit by August 21 on a PIL seeking direction to the government to provide safe passage to the pilgrims stranded there due to curfew in Kishtwar to enable them to return home.

Fodder scam: SC rejects Lalu Prasad's plea to change judge




NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected RJD chief Lalu Prasad's plea for transfer of trial court judge hearing the case against him in the fodder scam.

A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam, which had on July 9 restrained the trial court from passing the judgement in fodder scam case, gave its order on Tuesday on Lalu's plea.

Abu Salem will not be returned to Portugal, rules Supreme Court




New Delhi: The Supreme Court has ruled that the extradition of underworld don Abu Salem to India is valid. Salem is being tried for his alleged role in serial blasts in Mumbai in 1993 in which 257 people were killed and another 713 injured.

Salem, 45, was sent by Portugal to  Mumbai in November 2005 along with his then companion, actor Monica Bedi. He is imprisoned at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai.

Supreme Court quashes NEET, says no unified exam for medical courses




The Supreme Court on Thursday quashed the Medical Council of India's (MCI) notification for holding common entance tests for MBBS, BDS and post-graduate medical courses.

A three-judge bench by a 2:1 verdict held that the MCI notification was ultra vires of the Constitution.

The apex court, however, made it clear that its verdict will not affect the admissions which have already taken place.

Supreme Court stops trial court from delivering verdict against Lalu Yadav



In what comes as a major relief for Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Yadav, the Supreme Court today restrained the trial court in Ranchi from delivering its verdict in the fodder scam case in which Mr Yadav is accused of embezzling Rs. 30 crore from the government during his earlier term as chief minister of Bihar.

Mr Yadav had asked for his case to be transferred to a different court, alleging that Pravas Kumar Singh, the judge handling the verdict, is related to a senior minister in the current Bihar government headed by Nitish Kumar.

Chief justice Adly Mansour sworn in as interim president



CAIRO: The chief justice of Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court was sworn in on Thursday as the nation's interim president, taking over hours after the military ousted the Islamist President Mohammed Morsi.

Adly Mansour took the oath of office at the Nile-side Constitutional Court in a ceremony broadcast live on state television. According to military decree, Mansour will serve as Egypt's interim leader until a new president is elected. A date for that vote has yet to be set.

SC disposes of Musharraf treason petitions, directs govt to continue course


ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Wednesday disposed of the petitions calling for the registration of a treason case against former military ruler Pervez Musharraf and directed the government to continue approaching the matter in light of its official statement presented to the court.

The government had in its statement said that it would proceed in accordance with the law and prosecute Musharraf for treason — after taking the political forces into confidence.


SC refuses to change the dates of West Bengal Panchayat polls



New Delhi: In a setback for the Mamata Banerjee government, the Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to interfere with the Panchayat elections dates in the state. The elections are scheduled to be held in five phases from July 11 in the state.

SC adjourns Musharraf treason case indefinitely



ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the treason case against former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf for an indefinite period to hold consultations over setting up of a special court to hear the case against the ex-army strongman.

Moreover, the apex court also rejected a plea to order the formal arrest of Musharraf citing that no formal charges against the former president had been put before the court.

Musharraf to be tried under Article 6 for treason: PM Nawaz Sharif



ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif dropped the strongest hint on Monday to file a written request before the Supreme Court to try former military ruler General (retd) Pervez Musharraf for treason under Article 6 of the Constitution.

It is pertinent to mention that if convicted, Musharraf can face a possible death penalty or life imprisonment.

Addressing the National Assembly (NA), Nawaz Sharif said that the former president had committed treason by abrogating the Constitution and he should be tried under the law.

No concessions to west, Iran`s khamenei tells candidates



Tehran : Iran`s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei warned on Tuesday that the country`s next president should avoid making "concessions" to the west, saying this would not ease tensions over Tehran`s nuclear drive.

Khamenei is the ultimate decision maker in Iran and has the final say on all key issues, including its controversial nuclear programme, a major source of concern in the West over suspicions the Islamic republic is using it to develop weapons.

"Some (candidates) have the wrong analysis that by giving concessions to enemies, their anger towards Iran will be reduced," Khamenei said in a live televised speech. "This is a mistake."

NEW DELHI: CBI chief Ranjit Sinha on Thursday accepted the Supreme Court's observation that the country's premier investigating agency was a "caged parrot" that "speaks in its master's voice".Asked by reporters about his views on the apex court's caged parrot remark, Sinha said: "Whatever Supreme Court said is correct.

Kudankulam Nuclear plant gets green signal from Supreme Court



The Supreme Court today gave a green signal to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu.

The top court was hearing a batch of petitions challenging a Madras High Court order in August last year that, while asking India's nuclear watchdog to ensure that necessary safeguards were complied with, gave the go-ahead for the loading of fuel in the plant.

Supreme Court barred PPP's Syed Murad Ali Shah from contesting elections

ISLAMABAD: Supreme Court barred on Thursday former Sindh government minister Syed Murad Ali Shah from contesting elections overturning the Sindh High Court decision.A three member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry on Thursday issued an order to prevent Murad Ali Shah, belonging to the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) from contesting in May 11 polls on the ground that he holds dual nationality and thus violates Article 62 and 63 of the Constitution.

Mumbai gets its first Shariah court to settle civil, marital disputes



MUMBAI: The city is set to get its first Darul Qaza or Shariah court to settle civil and marital disputes in the Muslim community. The court, set up by the All India Muslim Personal Law Board will serve to fill a long-felt need of the community.Shariah courts already function at many places in the country, such as Hyderabad, Patna and Malegaon. Here qazis appointed by the AIMPLB hear the community's various disputes, barring criminal cases, and deliver judgements.

Narendra Modi never said 'go and kill people', says SIT



Ahmedabad: The lawyer of the Supreme Court-appointed Special Investigation Team (SIT), which has given a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in 2002 post-Godhra riots case after investigating complaint filed by Zakia Jafri, on Thursday said that "Modi has never said that go and kill people". Opposing the protest petition filed by Jafri against SIT's closure report, its lawyer RS Jamuar said, "(social activist) Teesta Setalvad and others have falsified the complaint targeting Chief Minister who had never said that go and kill people."

Non-bailable warrant issued against Sanjay Dutt



New Delhi: Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt is in trouble again. After getting five-year sentence by the Supreme Court for his alleged involvement in the 1993 Mumbai blasts, the Andheri court on Monday issued a non-bailable against the actor for threatening producer Shakeel Noorani.

According to Noorani, Dutt had signed a movie with him in 2002 but later backed out for some reasons. When the actor was asked to pay the signing amount and the losses incurred by the producer, Dutt simply refused and instead used his underworld contacts to threaten Noorani.
