MQM election office bombed; six killed


* Three relatives among dead
* Bomb concealed in motorcycle parked near election office

KARACHI: At least six people, including three relatives, were killed while around thirteen people wounded when a high intensity bomb shattered the election office of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) located in Nusrat Bhutto Colony, North Naizamabad on Thursday night.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan has reportedly claimed the responsibility for the blast. According to details, the bomb was concealed in a motorcycle parked near the election office of MQM. Although the election office was closed over an order by party chief Altaf Hussain after a blast on Tuesday night, several people gathered outside were wounded and nearby property suffered heavy losses.




Rescue teams immediately rushed to the blast site and shifted the injured to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medical treatment, where six of the critically wounded victims succumbed to their injuries during treatment. The deceased were identified as Bilal, 45, Imran, 25, Adil, 25, Mohammad Ayub, 25 and Mohammad Aqil, 25. The injured were identified as Zahoor, Fayyaz, Mohammad Niyaz, Qamar Ali, Abbas, Waleed, Shehzada, eight-year-old Imam, Mohammad Ali, Safran Bibi, Akhtar, Hamid and Rizwan.


SSP Amir Farooqi said that the terrorists who targeted the MQM election office had concealed the bomb in a motorcycle parked nearby. According to details, cars, two rickshaws, shops and the nearby building were damaged. To clarify the confusion surrounding the concealment of the bomb that surfaced during the course of initial investigation, DIG Zafar Abbas Bukhari said that the bomb was concealed in a motorcycle; however, the car, bearing registration no GL-0053, was parked nearby.

Following the attack tension gripped the area; a large number of MQM workers and supporter reached the blast site, while an additional contingent of law enforcers and Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) also reached the blast site.

After initial investigation, the BDS officials said that the improvised explosive device (IED) was planted in the car. The BDS also collected nuts, bolts and ball bearings from the blast site, and further said that the bomb might have weighed around three kilogrammes. Political and religious parties, including Pakistan People’s Party, Awami National Party, Jamaat-e-Islami and Majlis-e-Wahdat-e-Muslimeen condemned the blast.


On the killing of workers, MQM has announced a day of mourning across the province and appealed to the transporters and traders to support the mourning call. Meanwhile, educational institutions, including schools, colleges, universities, transporters and business community have announced to support the day of mourning.

All the educational institutes have postponed the papers to be held today (Friday) and new dates will be announced soon. MQM leader Altaf Hussain has strongly condemned the blast and extended sympathies to the grieving families who lost their loved ones. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.
