ISLAMABAD: Renewed efforts by Pakistan and the United States to focus on Afghanistan have resulted in a meeting of the Trilateral Core Group, where the three main players will meet on April 23-24 in Brussels.
“Pakistan has consistently endeavoured to facilitate an Afghan-led and Afghan-owned peace process. Pakistan remains committed to continue its positive and constructive role towards a durable peace in Afghanistan. Pakistan is convinced that a peaceful, stable, prosperous and united Afghanistan is in the interest of Afghanistan, Pakistan and the region”, said the spokesman at the Foreign Office while announcing the meeting.
Earlier, a key role was played by senior Afghan military officers who flew in to meet with the Pakistani military leadership in General Headquarters, where an exercise in damage control took place. The Afghan visit was important as it came against the backdrop of some very hawkish allegations by President Hamid Karzai against Pakistan. Clearly, Karzai’s government and his military were not on the same page.
This Trilateral Core Group meeting is key to focussing on ensuring peace and reconciliation efforts inside Afghanistan and which had been put on the backburner as Kabul was focussing more on creating mistrust, instead of taking up a leadership role. Pakistan’s delegation will be led by General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, Chief of Army Staff and Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani, who also on Sunday held important meetings with visiting US officials where the final touches were given to the Brussels meeting.
“This meeting is part of the high level consultation between Pakistan, Afghanistan and the US, Trilateral Core Group Meeting with Mr Hamid Karzai, President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Mr John Kerry, US Secretary of State. During the meeting, matters relating to peace and stability and national reconciliation in Afghanistan will be discussed,” added the spokesman.
On Sunday, Acting US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan David D. Pearce, met with Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani to discuss what the US Embassy says were “ways in which the United States and Pakistan can continue to work together to advance the Afghan-led reconciliation process.”
Reuters adds: The extent to which tension in relations between Pakitan and Afghanistan has reached, can be gauged from the statement of Karzai’s chief spokesman Aimal Faizi who said: “Our message to Pakistan is: ‘enough is enough’ - this time we will tell Pakistan that our people’s patience is running out and we can’t wait for Pakistan to deliver on Afghan peace promises.”
