2 killed in election rally blast as violence continues


* Hand grenade attack injures three PTI workers in Mardan
QUETTA: A roadside bomb exploded at an election rally in Sibbi on Sunday killing two people, officials said as violence continued ahead of historic polls on Saturday.

The remote-controlled bomb went off when Sarfraz Dombki, an independent candidate for a provincial assembly seat, was leading a rally in Sibbi, 160 kilometres southeast of Quetta, senior administration official Aziz Jamali told AFP. “The blast hit one of the cars in the convoy in which two of his guards were travelling. Both were fatally wounded,” Jamali said. He said Dombki’s supporters spotted two men fleeing on a motorbike after the blast. “They opened fire and killed one and captured another who had been wounded in the firing,” he said.




“Dombki was unhurt and no one else was wounded in the blast,” his cousin Dostain Dombki, who is contesting for a National Assembly seat, told AFP. Police confirmed the incident, saying that two hand grenades were recovered from the suspected attacker who had been arrested. Meanwhile, a hand grenade was reportedly lobbed at PTI supporters in Mardan on Sunday, wounding three people. The attack took place in Takhtbhai area of Mardan. According to reports, the PTI workers were returning from a party meeting when the hand grenade was thrown at them. The injured were shifted to District Headquarters Hospital, Mardan for treatment.


At least two persons activists of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (Nazaryati) were injured in a hand grenade attack on an election campaign office of the party at Killi Deba on Sunday. Police said that the victims were at the party election campaign office when unidentified men riding a motorbike hurled a hand grenade at the camp. As many as nine people were injured as the offices of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and National Party were attacked in parts of Balochistan on Sunday.

Local police sources said unidentified men attacked the office of PML-N candidate from NA 271 Kharan cum Panjgur General (r) Abdul Qadir Baloch with a hand grenade in Kharan town. The explosion left five PML-N workers present in the office injured besides damaging the electoral office. Meanwhile, militants lobbed a hand grenade at the electoral office of a National Party candidate in Mach town of Bolan district leaving three party workers injured.
