Ahmedis announce boycott of election over ‘discrimination’

* Jamaat Ahmediyya alleges discrimination against Ahmedis in voter lists

LAHORE: In order to register its protest against alleged discrimination in voters list, the Jamaat Ahmediyya Pakistan (JAP) has formally announced again that separate voter lists based on religious beliefs specifically for Ahmedis is discrimination and against the spirit of joint electorate, therefore the Ahmedis would not participate in the upcoming elections.

The spokesman of the JAP, Saleemuddin has reconfirmed the group’s stance in a press release issued on Sunday, which read that its disassociates itself from the elections “because of the discrimination with the Ahmedis in the voter lists”. He said that the voter registration forms that the election commission has introduced have a special entry for religion.

Saleemuddin said that in order to register for these voter forms Ahmedis have to disassociate from the Holy Prophet (PBUH) which no Ahmedi could ever imagine, adding that it is important to note that for joint electorate there is supposed to be a single voter list for everyone, but against this rule in 2002 and 2008 general elections special orders were issued to prepare separate voter lists for Ahmedis.

For the 2013 general election this was not changed rather the election commission in its guide for voter list preparation included the following as a special entry under clause number 12, he said, adding that votes of Ahmedis should be added in a separate list in the initial voter lists and the top of the register page should state “for Ahmedis only”.

The JAP spokesperson said after this order and its implementation every Pakistani Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Parsi, Muslim or member of any other religion would be together on one list while there will be a separate list for Ahmedis only. Terming it as the worst kind of discrimination and bigotry, he said that this is against the rights given in the constitution of Pakistan and specifically against the spirit of joint electorate as well, as it is also against the conventions on human rights that the state of Pakistan has signed.

Saleemuddin alleged that this is also an intentional attempt to separate Ahmedis from the national discourse. He said that he has written to the election commission and has also informed the commission about these concerns in a specific meeting, but unfortunately the election commission has done nothing regarding this so there is no choice left for JAP but to announce disassociation from general elections 2013 in order to register their protest.
