Another MQM office bombed; three killed


* 35 others including children wounded as two blasts hit MQM’s unit office near Nine Zero

KARACHI: At least three people were killed and 35 others, including Rangers personnel and children, were wounded when two consecutive blasts jolted a MuttahidaQaumi Movement (MQM) office near the MQM head office Nine Zero on Saturday evening.

According to details, the first bomb exploded at around 8:50pm near the MQM Unit-153 office in Azizabad Block-8. MQM workers were present at party office at the time of blast, which injured several people. Following the first blast, MQM’s supporters, rescue workers and law enforcers rushed to the crime scene and were busy shifting the injured to the hospital when, at around 9:10pm, the second and more intensive blast occurred.




The second blast turned out to be more lethal in terms of casualties, as many party workers, children, journalists, rescue workers, and personnel of law enforcement agencies were injured in the follow-up blast. The victims were shifted to AbbasiShaheed Hospital, Sindh Government Hospital and other private hospitals for treatment. Doctors said that three of the injured were death, while more than 30 injured were admitted for treatment. They said that the condition of 15 of the victims was critical.


DIG Zafar Abbas Bukhari confirmed that the blast took place on a road on the backside of the MQM Headquarters. He said that primary investigation revealed that both bombs were planted devices, which were detonated using mobile phones.

The blasts also damaged the vehicles, houses and shops located in the surrounding areas. The Bomb Disposal Squad (BDS) personnel also reached the scene after two hours of the blasts. BDS experts pointed out that the first bomb was a planted device, carrying at least two kilogrammes of explosives, while the second one was of a similar weight, but contained Nuts, bolts, ball bearings and iron pieces. The BDS officials also pointed out that both bombs were packed in cement blocks.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed in the area following the attacks. In wake of killing of MQM workers and attack on party offices, the party announced a day of mourning across the province, and urged transporters and traders to support the strike call.


MQM chief AltafHussain, President Asif Ali Zardari, ANP Sindh chief Shahi Syed, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Governor Dr IshratulEbad and the Sindh chief minister condemned the incident.

Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) spokesman EhsanullahEhsan has reportedly claimed responsibility for the blasts.

The attack came just a day after ANP candidate SadiqZamanKhattak was gunned down along with his four-year-old son by the TTP in Bilal Colony, Karachi.
