MADHOPUR (PATHANKOT): Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Sunday made a full-throated declaration of support for BJP election campaign committee chairman NarendraModi saying the NDA was a united and ShiromaniAkaliDal would contest the 2014 LokSabha polls under Modi's leadership.
"Punjab and I feel it's a privilege to have you addressing your first rally after taking charge. You are our flag-bearer now," the Akali patriarch said at a rally to mark the 60th 'martyrdom day' of Jan Sangh founder Shyama Prasad Mukherjee.
"We have to fight Punjab's second war. The first one was against terrorism. This one is against corrupt practices and hideous activities of the Congress," Badal said. The 85-year-old fivetime chief minister, seen as a frontrunner for the post of NDA convenor, asked Modi to assert his role beyond his state. "Gujarat loves you and even if you don't go there for a while, they will still carry on with your agenda. I expect them to spare their leader for national duty in the larger interest of the country," Badal said.
Badal also attacked the UPA government saying its top leadership was "weak and totally confused". "I agree that the nation suffered from duality of command and that has resulted in confusion and chaos in the administration. No one knows who to listen to." He also said Modi would ensure communal harmony in the country.
