The United Kingdom’s Trade and Investment Minister Stephen Green, on his first visit to Myanmar, stressed four key areas Myanmar needs to improve to receive more foreign investments.
Lord Green said the UK recognises the attractiveness of Myanmar market but the key hindrances for foreign investments are the corruption and lack of transparency, physical and technological infrastructure inhibiting free flow of information, under-developed banking systems and insufficient qualified labours in the country.
“I understand Myanmar government is focusing on these issues to attract highest quality investments. UK government and businessmen fully support it,” the minister said at Traders Hotel Yangon on Thursday.
Global Times: Don’t overestimate the impact of Myanmar’s changes on China – Ding Gang
Mon 10 Jun 2013
Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi stated clearly on the 6th that “I want to run for president.” Chinese online media quickly reported the news.
Since U Thein Sein’s government began to push for the country’s political reform, Aung San Suu Kyi’s domestic and international influence has been rising. Some people in China believe that the political impact of Myanmar’s changes will ripple over China. There are voices online using Myanmar’s changes to insinuate the same for China.
Myanmar’s changes certainly will influence China. But some people perhaps have overestimated that impact. From both long-term and short-term perspectives, China’s influence over Myanmar is much stronger than the contrary. The key question is not how we should respond to the impact on China by Myanmar’s changes, but how we should use soft and hard powers to influence Myanmar.
