MUZAFFARABAD, June 16: Abdul Khaliq Ansari, the founder of the Jammu Kashmir Plebiscite Front, was laid to rest in southern Mirpur district on Sunday, a day after his death. He was 87.
Earlier in the day, about 2,000 people attended his funeral at the Quaid-i-Azam Stadium, Mirpur.
Prominent among those who attended the funeral were AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed, former AJK prime minister Barrister Sultan Mahmood, Supreme head of Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) Amanullah Khan, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation League president Abdul Majeed Malick, AJK Supreme Court Chief Justice Muhammad Azam Khan, PML-N MPA Muhammad Rafique, National Liberation Front chairman Shaukat Maqbool Butt and former ambassador Arif Kamal.
They also paid tribute to the late leader. JKLF chairman Yasin Malik also addressed mourners by telephone from Srinagar.
Mr Ansari, regarded as the pioneer of the ideology of an independent state of Kashmir, was born in October 1926 in Dadyal. He graduated from the Prince of Wales College Jammu and earned his LLB degree from the Punjab University.
He authored a number of books on the region and the conflict it is embroiled in. He underwent imprisonment before and after 1947 for his unflinching commitment towards his cause.
