The UK government has announced financial support of NRs 2 billion (£14.5 million) for various projects related to the upcoming Constituent Assembly polls in Nepal.
Through the UK's Department for International Development (DFID), the UK is looking to provide an additional £4m to the Nepal Peace Trust Fund. DFID will also support womens' participation, election observation and training for journalists through projects worth up to £2m, stated a press release issued by the Kathmandu-based British Embassy on Monday.
"As a longstanding friend of Nepal, the UK is determined to do all it can to support Nepal in its preparations for free, credible, democratic and inclusive elections this November. For this purpose, the UK has already provided a total of £3.5m through the Nepal Peace Trust Fund and £5m through UNDP,” the British Ambassador to Nepal Andres James Sparkes said.
Only legitimate demands of dissident parties would be addressed: Dahal
UCPN (Maoist) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has promised that only the ‘legitimate’ demands of CPN-Maoist and other dissident parties opposed to Constituent Assembly election will be addressed by the government.
Talking to media-persons at Biratnagar Airport of Morang district on Monday, he said that the demands for dissolution of the current election government and the High Level Political Committee (HLPC) headed by four major parties (of which Dahal’s party is an important constituent) is “illegitimate and unacceptable”.
